In metals these forms are usually oxides or hydroxides.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately these chemical transformations have an impact on the properties of the materials, deviating performance from the intended target. As an example, carbon-steel corrodes to form iron oxide, which in turn leads to material disaggregation, rendering a given part with reduced mechanical properties.<\/p>\n<p>The role of a passive corrosion protection coating is to prevent the contact of the substrate material with the corrosive agents causing chemical transformation. To provide this functional role, a coating must adhere strongly to the substrate, while being as inert as possible to the surrounding environment. Chemical inertness is however not sufficient in many cases, as the coating must also deliver adequate resistance to permeability through its thickness.
