Self‑lubrication is the capability of providing low friction characteristics in a contact between surfaces in relative motion without usage of external agents such as fluid lubricants.
Fluoropolymers present outstanding low friction properties usable from cryogenic temperatures to temperatures exceeding the upper limit of fluid lubricants. As solid lubricants, they can also be used in vacuum environment, such as Space, without volatilizing or significantly outgassing. This amazing behavior is combined with extreme inertness to render them as materials of choice for lubrication under aggressive environment conditions such as chemical processing equipment.
